one rug

This 20 square felt rug is hands-down the most satisfying craft project I've undertaken to date. There's something so cool about making your own fabric from scratch using unspun wool, warm soapy water, a bamboo mat and pure muscle power. I think I'll blanket stitch around the outside edge to tidy up the slight wonkiness, but beyond that it's ready to be stepped on and enjoyed.

Love it! I've been thinking of one for my lounge room floor but not sure of the thickness of the felt you would need to make - would you mind telling me how many layers? Also will you put a nonslip back on it?

Thanks Lisa! I used four layers of merino wool roving per square, which makes the same thickness as my felt rug from Trade Aid, which is still going strong after a few years of heavy foot traffic. I don't have wooden floors so I won't be needing a non-slip backing, but you could buy a couple of thin rubber bath mats from the Warehouse and place them underneath it or a sqaure of rubber carpet underlay would do the trick. Happy felting!

Thank you Meliors. What a lovely comment. Your amazing creativity is a huge inspiration to me too.
Hey Bronwyn, that's SUCH a cool rug! I absolutely love it. So inspiring. Great choice of colours too. I love how it's like a modern, crafty take on ye olde checked blanket. I want one! I might just have to make one : )
