Sabuda strikes again

Another Christmas treat that I received (you may be beginning to doubt whether I am, in fact, a mature 44 year old!) was the latest pop-up book by the amazing paper engineers, Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart. WOW! Just when you think nothing more remains to be done with pop-up forms, you open it up and Medusa leaps out at you!

 

This is the latest in a series of pop-up mythological creatures from around the world. The book includes Count Dracula, a Centaur, a Chinese Dragon, the Abominable Snowman, and the Minotaur, among others.

As with all of Sabuda and co's books, the smaller pop-ups located to the sides of the central figure, are often just as magical. The little gargoyles below, sitting in the window and turret of a castle, are a good example, as is the image of the centaur with his bow and arrow at the ready.

Photographs can never capture the magic of opening up the page and seeing the intricately collapsed figure inside slowly raise itself from the central fold. I never grow tired of it.
